The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA / UoA) is Greece’s oldest and one of its most prestigious higher education institutions, with a long-standing tradition of excellence in education, research, and societal engagement. With a broad academic spectrum spanning the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, medicine, and engineering-related disciplines, NKUA plays a central role in advancing knowledge and supporting innovation at both national and European levels.
Building on its strong research capacity in Artificial Intelligence, data-intensive research, and digital humanities, NKUA contributes to the development of advanced AI solutions that bridge cutting-edge technology with language, culture, and societal needs. Its interdisciplinary research environment enables the integration of large-scale data resources with AI methodologies, supporting responsible innovation and the valorisation of high-quality academic and cultural content.
Within PHAROS – The Greek AI Factory, NKUA participates as an affiliated partner under GRNET, contributing validated and close-to-market AI products that enrich the PHAROS portfolio of HPC and AI services, tools, and applications. In particular, NKUA is actively involved in developing AI services for language and culture, alongside other national partners. Through this role, NKUA supports the creation of the Greek Language Data Space and the data space for Greek cultural content, contributes to dataset annotation and preprocessing pipelines, and advances open AI models, benchmarks, and evaluation tools tailored to Greek language and cultural domains.
Through its academic excellence, rich data assets, and applied AI expertise, NKUA strengthens PHAROS’ capacity to deliver high-impact AI services for language and culture, supporting SMEs, researchers, and public institutions, and ensuring that AI-enabled solutions are aligned with European data spaces, public value, and Greece’s cultural and linguistic heritage.
