The National Documentation Centre (EKT) is Greece’s national organisation responsible for the collection, organisation, preservation, and dissemination of scientific, research, and cultural content and data. Operating under the Ministry of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence, it serves as a key national infrastructure for scholarly communication, digital repositories, and open science, and as a National Authority of the Hellenic Statistical System.
Drawing on its expertise in data governance, metadata standards, RDI metrics and digital content management, as well as its long-standing participation in European projects and networks, EKT supports evidence-based policymaking, research excellence, and the integration of Greek knowledge infrastructures into European initiatives. Through SearchCulture.gr, EKT acts as the national aggregator for cultural heritage, aggregating, organising, and publishing digital cultural collections, ensuring their long-term accessibility and supporting their integration into Europeana.
Within PHAROS – The Greek AI Factory, EKT participates as an affiliated partner under GRNET, contributing to the Culture and Language vertical and to the development of the Greek node of the Common European Data Space for Cultural Heritage. Building on its national infrastructure, EKT supports the adoption of data- and AI-enabled approaches by cultural heritage institutions, contributes to the design of AI services, including use cases and functional requirements, and participates in the communication and dissemination of the project’s activities and results, while promoting responsible dataset reuse and public-value-driven AI innovation.
Through this combination of data stewardship, service design input, and ecosystem coordination, EKT helps ensure that AI innovation for Greek culture and language is grounded in real needs, public value, and responsible practices.
