PHAROS AI Factory, Greece’s national ecosystem for accelerating Artificial Intelligence innovation, participated in the Language Data Space Country Workshop in Greece, held on December 9, 2025, at the Hellenic Ministry of Digital Governance & Artificial Intelligence, Athens.
The Language Data Space Country Workshops are part of a Europe-wide initiative to build Common European Data Spaces, secure and interoperable environments that enable trusted data sharing across key sectors such as health, mobility, energy, cultural heritage and language. By hosting workshops in EU Member States, the LDS consortium and the European Commission aim to raise awareness of this emerging data-sharing ecosystem and engage national stakeholders in discussions on the technical, economic and strategic dimensions of language data, particularly for the development of advanced Language Technologies and AI applications.
The event, co-organised by the European Language Data Space (LDS) and the Institute for Language and Speech Processing (ILSP) of the Athena Research Center, gathered participants from Greek industry, public administration, academia and the research community, demonstrating strong national interest in advancing language data infrastructure and AI technologies. The agenda featured, among others, presentations from the European Commission and the Hellenic Ministry of Digital Governance and AI represented by the Special Secretary for AI and Data Governance, Vassilis Karkatzounis, as well as contributions from PHAROS’ Consortium representatives. Sessions examined the role of high-quality language data in developing modern Language Technologies and Large Language Models (LLMs), the Greek national strategy for public data and AI, and the country’s readiness to cultivate a robust language data market.
A central part of the programme was the panel discussion “Pharos, the Greek AI Factory: synergies for enabling excellence in Greek AI”, in which representatives from the PHAROS Consortium -V. Karkaletsis, Director of NCSR Demokritos & PHAROS Technical Coordinator, V. Katsouros, Director of the Institute for Language and Speech at Athena Research Center, N. Koziris, Professor at NTUA, P. Louridas, Director of Research and Development at GRNET & Professor at AUEB, A. Sevasti, Chief Technology Officer at Growthfund, and K. Tolias, Director of the National Documentation Centre- took part alongside the Special Secretary for Strategic Foresight at the Government of Greece, Yannis Mastrogeorgiou. During the session, the focus was on PHAROS’ mission, national role and complementarities with the LDS initiative, as well as on opportunities for cooperation, joint actions and synergies to support the growth of Greece’s AI and data innovation ecosystem.
The workshop highlighted the strategic importance of language data and cross-sector collaboration for a competitive, value-driven AI ecosystem in Greece. Through its participation, PHAROS reaffirmed its role in advancing responsible, transparent, and collaborative AI development aligned with European values, and its commitment to strengthening the country’s position within the European AI landscape through research, innovation, and public-sector engagement.
